Venturing into "A Dark Room": A Minimalist Text-Based Gaming Adventure

For this assignment, I challenged myself to play a video game online for my SCC social media class. Since I’m not normally into video games, I took on this task purely for the sake of the assignment, but to my surprise, I found myself enjoying A Dark Room because it taps into my love for reading, storytelling, and fantasy worlds.

Since this is an assignment for my SCC social media class, I've decided to include the required questions in this blog post to match more of a Q&A style format. The questions have been typed in bold below.

What game did you play?

I played A Dark Room, an online text-based adventure game that slowly unfolds as you interact with the environment.

What game genre does your game fall into?
A Dark Room falls into the genre of role-playing games (RPG) and incremental (idle) games, with strong storytelling elements.

Research this game online and describe its community of players. Who plays this type of game?
A Dark Room has a devoted fanbase of players who enjoy minimalist games, storytelling, survival strategy, and text-based adventures. The appeal of this game has players like me that love the game's slow-burn mystery and resource management aspects. I found myself on Reddit to find more information about the game and tactics but ended up learning much more with discussions on theories and hidden parts of the game, making it seem like the game is popular among gamers who enjoy deep thinking and exploration.

Where did you play the game (mobile or computer or game platform)?
I played it on my computer through the website adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com.

How many times did you play?
I played two separate sessions to fully explore the different stages of the game.

Describe what you did/did not like about the game.
I loved the simplicity and how it sparked imagination without flashy graphics. However, the extremely slow start made it a little frustrating at first until the game opened up.

Are you a regular player?
No, I’m not usually a regular player of text-based games or any video games in general.

Will you play again?
Yes, I’m eager to continue and uncover the mysteries hidden in the game.

What social media aspects are woven into the game you played? Provide at least one (1) specific example.
Although A Dark Room does not integrate social media directly into gameplay, it is heavily discussed on social media platforms like Reddit, where players share strategies, hidden tips, and game endings. The community helps players navigate the very cryptic style of the game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, going into this assignment, I really didn’t expect much since I’m not a video game person at all. But trying A Dark Room showed me that games tied to storytelling and imagination can actually be a lot of fun especially for someone who loves reading and fantasy like I do. It was a good reminder that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to surprising new interests.
